It is generally difficult to measure or estimate exciting force so as to estimate sound power radiating from a vibrating structure. We have thus proposed the virtual exciting force that can be calculated with the distribution of vibratory velocity on a surface of the structure and theoretical modal analysis of the structure. By using this virtual exciting force, one can estimate the sound radiation power and carry out the structural optimization to reduce the sound radiation power. For an example, the virtual exciting force of a cantilever rectangular plate was calculated and expermentally examined.
